Should Women Golfers Be Allowed To Wear Leggings On The Course?

What’s The Deal With Leggings?

United Airlines has recently created a fuss over dress code on their airplanes. A few weeks ago, they barred two teenage girls from boarding a flight because they were wearing spandex leggings. Apparently, since they were traveling using an employee travel pass, the dress code banned them from wearing certain apparel, including leggings.  The teenagers agreed to change their clothing and take a later flight.

This incident has caused a social media uproar with the question being asked — Should there be restrictions with what women can and cannot wear? Where should the line be drawn? Is it inappropriate for women to wearing leggings in certain situations? What about on the golf course?

Celebrities like Shannon Watts and Christine Teigen have chimed into this conversation by tweeting about the issue:

The constant debate about when or where women should be allowed to wear leggings is a bit ridiculous. Sure, if you’re going to a super important business conference in Boston, you’re going to want to dress-up. But if you’re going on an airplane for 8 hours, us women want to be comfortable. Who wants to wear jeans for that long? It’s tight, uncomfortable and annoying to wear.

What About Wearing Leggings in Golf?

Well, leggings count as athletic wear, and golf is a sport. In more recent years, leggings have even become accepted as pants. Several women on the LPGA Tour are taking a stand when it comes to sporting a more feminine look while teeing it up. Michelle Wie, for example, has been known to wear leggings under her skirts. As long as the leggings in question are made from a thicker fabric, women should consider them a stylish, comfortable option for the driving range and for the golf course.

Leggings

Golf companies, such as Nike and Puma, are working to creating women’s golf leggings that are fashionable and functional. Lately, I’ve been wearing the Nike Gray Solid Women’s Golf Leggings. These leggings are made with flat seams and stretchy Dri-FIT fabric that hugs your body for total comfort through every round. Especially this time of year, when the New England weather constantly fluctuates between the cold and rainy days, these leggings give me the option of staying warm and dry.

Benefits of Wearing Golf Leggings:

  • Leggings give you 100% of your natural range of motion, helping you perform better.
  • It can be warming, which gives winter golfers a whole new world of wardrobe options.
  • Leggings can be cooling, as offered by the companies that tout the sunscreening properties of their fabrics.
  • Some golf leggings do not cinch your waist. Nike’s leggings have elastic on top to sit around your thigh (something like what bikers have been wearing).
  • Some leggings not only cinch your waist, they shrink it. For this property, look for “compression” on the package.
  • Golf leggings let a woman get away with short skorts or shorts. This is awesome for the young adults who want to stray away from the traditional golf attire.
  • Leggings show the shapeliness of a woman’s legs without showing the imperfections. Those of you who are over 40 know what I’m talking about.

Girls, It’s Time To Rock The Golf Skorts (No Matter Your Size)

Golf Skorts That Will Fit Your Body Type

As the weather gets warmer and the golf season draws near, I’m hoping to find a stylish outfit that I can rock on the golf course. Many women golfers will probably want to stick with the knee-length shorts and collared t-shirts, but, I want to challenge you to find an outfit that makes you feel good while you kick butt on the course. Wearing skorts/skirts is not only fashionable, but allows your legs to breathe!

There’s no better way to show off your feminine side than to sport a golf skirt or skort when you play, but you need to make sure you get the right fit and wear the best pieces for your body type. Here are some pointers that can help in selecting the appropriate style for you:

Athletic. If you have an athletic build with narrow hips and slim legs, you’ll look better in styles that have a little drape (extra fabric), pockets at the sides and back pockets with flaps. All these details will give your figure some curves. Ruffles are your best friend. You’ll also want to keep your length slightly above the knee, to show off your slim legs. You can pull off any bold print.

Straight/Thin. If you’re like me, you are thin with a narrow waist and a small bust. You have trouble fitting into clothes that are stretchy. Sometimes, your skorts don’t quite fit the way you want them to. The best advice I have is to find golf skirts with the hem that stops at the shapeliest part of you calf. That will be your best bet. Play with belts, coats, pleats, tights, etc. to maximize the appearance you want to achieve. Also, rocking some bright colors like pink, orange or blue will accentuate your body a little bit more.

Hourglass. The key to dressing an hourglass body type is to balance your lower body with your bust, while accentuating your waist.  To accommodate this, pick skort styles that fit close to the waist and then drape out over the hips and bottom. And since you have a bigger bust, a nice polo v-neck will suit you well.

Accenuate your waist with a golf skort that drapes out a bit.

Oval. You tend to have an undefined waist, a full torso, broad shoulders and slim legs. Pick skirts with a minimal waist band or a style with no waist band at all. De-emphasize your midsection and create a more defined waist. Choose clothing that will add curves and fullness to your lower body and tops that taper to a waist. You have amazing legs so feel free to play with skirt lengths, but don’t go too short otherwise you will further a top-heavy look.

Whatever your body type, you can find a golf skort that will fit you just the way you are. So, go out on the golf course and rock a skort. Be confident, be fashionable. There are tons of brands, sizes and styles to choose from. Just make sure to do some research and find what will best suit you.
